Opacity in Lardil: stratal vs. serial derivations in OT
نویسندگان
چکیده
is paper presents a derivational OT account of the word-nal deletion and augmentation alternations in Lardil. It presents two arguments in favor of the stratal view of derivations where the grammar is dierent at dierent stages (Bermúdez-Otero forthcoming, Kiparsky forthcoming), and against the serial view where the ranking is the same at all steps, and each step constitutes a minimal change (McCarthy 2006, 2007 et seq.). First, Lardil consonant deletion and vowel deletion cannot both be harmonically improving with respect to the same OT ranking (Kavitskaya and Staroverov 2010, McCarthy 2006). Second, the patterns ofminimal word augmentation require some amount of derivational lookahead in a theory where each derivational step may only involve a minimal change.

Learning opacity in Stratal Maximum Entropy Grammar
(Kiparsky 1971, 1973) draws attention to cases of historical change that suggest that at least some opaque phonological process interactions are difficult to learn. In his work on Stratal Optimality Theory (Stratal OT), he further claims that independent evidence about the stratal affiliation of a process is helpful in learning an opaque interaction (Kiparsky 2000). In this paper, we develop a ...
متن کاملA Stratal OT Approach to a Noun-Verb Asymmetry With Respect to Opacity in Korean
This paper revisits the well-known opacity caused by the interaction of post-obstruent tensification and coda cluster simplification in Korean and suggests a new class of data that threatens the validity of previous approaches. The new data shows that the opacity occurs only if the input belongs to a certain morphological category such as verb. Therefore, it calls for a theory in which morpholo...
متن کاملSerial Markedness Reduction
Recent work in Harmonic Serialism (HS) has led to new insights into several outstanding problems in phonology. The gradual, serial optimization inherent to HS offers novel perspectives on the too-manyrepairs problem (McCarthy 2008a) and makes it possible to capture generalizations stated at intermediate levels of representation (McCarthy 2008b, Elfner to appear). This work has also highlighted ...
متن کاملOpacity in Tundra Nenets
The analysis of opaque relations presents a problem to classic Optimality Theory (OT) (Prince and Smolensky 1993, McCarthy and Prince 1993), inherently a surface-oriented theory. Many different proposals have been made to integrate the analysis of opacity into OT. In this paper, we address the problem of opacity in Tundra Nenets (TN), a Uralic (Samoyedic) language spoken in Arctic Russia and No...
